Asterope Locker Virus – Removal Instructions

Asterope Locker is a very nasty and potentially expensive computer virus. Computer security experts classify Asterope Locker as a ransomware trojan. Viruses that are classified as ransomware trojans take over the use of a computer then scramble or encrypt the user’s files until the computer is unusable. The infected computer’s user will then receive a message asking for a ransom to be paid in cash or in virtual currency to unlock the computer. If the user pays the amount, then the user will be given a secret key to unlock the computer. The user is threatened by the virus that if he or she does not pay the ransom, then the key will be destroyed.

If the user does not pay the ransom, then the files could be lost forever. Asterope Locker is usually spread through email attachments. A seemingly harmless email that appears to have been sent by a real and legitimate company will contain a compressed ZIP file. The compressed file will contain an executable file and what seems like a PDF file. To trick users and email scanning antivirus software, Asterope Locker actually hides as the PDF file instead of the executable file. Once the PDF is opened, the virus is installed on the computer.

Asterope Locker holds an infected computer’s files for ransom by encrypting them. The encryption on files is virtually impossible to break unless the user pays the ransom. Those who have computers with Asterope Locker are asked for 400 Euros, $400 via webmoney. Asterope Locker victims are given 72 hours to pay the ransom. If they do not pay the ransom, then the key will supposedly get destroyed. However, some users have even reported that the encryption key they were given after paying the ransom was completely bogus.

They ended up with less money and a useless computer. Computer security analysts believe that only 1.3% of the 500,000 users infected with Asterope Locker actually paid the ransom. Those who did not pay the ransom most likely had files backed up, so they were less affected by the virus. While Asterope Locker, unlike other viruses, does not steal personal date, it is still a potentially devastating virus because it can render important files and documents unusable. The best way to prevent an infection of Asterope Locker is to stay vigilant and not to open any random files from email senders you do not completely trust.
