Virus – Removal Instructions

The virus is considered by computer security professionals as a browser hijacker and as a potentially unwanted program. A browser hijacker changes the user’s web browser settings without permission. A user contracts the virus by installing another program. Sometimes, free programs downloaded from the internet use bundled installations, meaning these installations will install more than just the desired program.

Many times, when a user installs such a free program, he or she will also install other accessory software, such as Astromenda. The virus is usually installed on a computer without the user’s consent because the user will have no option of not installing Astromenda when installing the desired software. Because rarely will the user consent to installing Astromenda, computer security professionals label it as a potentially unwanted program.

The virus will set an infected user’s homepage to, change the default search engine to Astromenda Search, and install the Astromenda toolbar in the browser. It can also cause other changes in an infected computer, causing it to slow down. Then, the Astromenda homepage will show advertisements depending on the user’s search habits. The Astromenda homepage is purposely designed to look similar to the Google homepage in order to trick users. The browser toolbar claims to help users be connected on the internet better because it includes links to popular social networking websites.

The virus will affect Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. The purpose of the virus is to generate search revenue for Astromenda as its ads are shown when its search engine is used. Unfortunately for users, these advertisements are often considered intrusive. The Astromenda search engine is also designed to maximize ad revenue, not provide the most relevant results. Users whose computers are infected will rarely receive the search results they want. The easiest method to see if a computer is infected with the virus is to open Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. If the homepage is, then the computer is infected.
