Computer Kidnappers And How To Avoid Them.

If you have been following the news lately, you will be aware of a type of malicious software known as ransomware that is doing the rounds. Aptly named ‘Locky” it encrypts the files on your computer and will in essence ‘kidnap’ them and not release access to them until you pay a ransom to the hackers.

Locky Ransomware – How Does It Spread?

Hackers or ‘Computer Kidnappers’  release Locky Ransomware onto unsuspecting victims’ computers. This ransomware is spread through waves of phishing spam messages. Cleverly hidden in attachments to your email when, once opened, quickly spreads onto your Windows operating system.

What Does It Do?

The ransomware scans your system and basically encrypts your data so it is unreadable by you. Much the same as a human being is kidnapped. You then receive a ‘ransom’ notice to pay a hefty amount of money to the unknown Computer Kidnappers.  Only once they receive their ‘ransom’ are your files unlocked.

What Can I Do To Protect Myself?

There are some basic steps you can do to protect your PC from computer kidnappers;

Firstly,

  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus program and operating system up to date with the latest security patches. If you do not have any antivirus or PC Security software, it is highly recommended that you purchase a good one and install it.
  • Do not open any unsolicited emails or file attachments from unknown senders.
  • Disable Macro commands in Microsoft Office files you receive.
  • Backup your files regularly and keep a copy on an unconnected hard drive or external source.
  • Always run your antivirus and/or PC security program before and after accessing the internet.

Although this may not guarantee that you will be safe from computer kidnappers, following these few steps should help making it that little bit harder for them to gain access to your system.
