CryptoGraphic Locker Virus – Removal Instructions

CryptoGraphic Locker is a type of trojan computer virus referred to as ransomware. This trojan virus downloads itself onto the computers of people running Microsoft Windows and encrypts certain types of files. The virus is often downloaded through a seemingly innocuous email containing a ZIP file. Once this file is downloaded, users will receive a message that certain files have been encrypted, and that they can be decrypted for a fee of $400 U.S. dollars or Bitcoin. Victims of the virus are given a specific deadline before the key is deleted; after the deadline passes, the CryptoGraphic Locker operators offer the same decryption but for a much higher price.

Once the CryptoGraphic Locker virus was discovered, officials advised users not to pay the ransom.
Users that ignored this advice often did not receive the promised decryption. Additionally, even if the original file containing the CryptoGraphic Locker virus is removed, the affected files remain encrypted in such a way that decryption professionals were stumped. The private key is only available through the malware servers and is therefore inaccessible to victims or their IT professionals. Important files should be backed up for easy restoration in case trojan viruses like CryptoGraphic Locker infect the computer’s files.

CryptoGraphic Locker uses Microsoft’s default settings against itself by downloading as a disguised PDF file. This hides the “.exe” suffix that would normally signal a fraudulent download to the user. The virus installs itself in a folder which is programmed to run on startup. When it eventually runs, the server creates a key pair, sending the public key back to the victim while retaining the private decryption key. Targeted files include Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and other Microsoft-related products.

The server is thought to be connected to a local proxy so that it can constantly change locations and remain untraceable. The CryptoGraphic Locker operators even came up with a secondary solution to offer to victims that hadn’t yet paid up: an online service that decrypts their files at a higher price. They disguised themselves so that their victims could not identify them as the original source of the virus. Eventually, CryptoGraphic Locker inspired a number of copycat programs and viruses that infected a number of individuals’ computers.
