Cryptowall Virus – Removal Instructions

It may seem to appear out of nowhere, a threatening message alerting you that you can no longer access the files on your computer unless you remit payment. The virus known as Cryptowall is a type of malware, malicious browser hijack, known as “ransomeware.” After Cryptowall infects and disables a computer, poses as a law enforcement agency such as the FBI. Cryptowall make use fabricated logos from legitimate law enforcement agencies to make its case believable to users of computers infected by the virus. The ransomware states that law enforcement agencies have been monitoring the users computer and has discovered illegal material on the user’s hard drive.

Because the user’s computer has already been infected by the virus by the time Cryptowall states its ransom, subjects of the attacks lose access to their files and folders. Cryptowall demands that users send money through financial services such as Green Dot or wire transfers and states that file and folder access will be restore once payment has been remitted. There is no reason to believe file and folder access will be restored after the required payment has been made, so users of infected computer shouldn’t comply with the ransom request. A legitimate law enforcement agency wouldn’t demand money to release evidence, if illegal material was indeed found on your computer.

The ransomware known as Cryptowall can infect computer in a variety of ways, each conventional forms of viral infection. The malware may be embedded in an email attachment and may begin infecting your computer after you open the attached file. It may also appear in the form of an update to your operating system or a program on your computer. The update may bear many of the hallmarks of a legitimate patch, but Cryptowall will install instead of the vital operating system or programs files the user expects to be loaded on to their computer. The malware may also be embedded in compromised programs.

When a user installs a program from an un-trusted source, Cryptowall may be included in the program files. The malware may lie dormant for a term before, operating in your computer’s background, before it emerges with the ransom notice. While the malware operates in your computer’s background, it encrypts your files and folders so that you can’t access them. The period of dormancy helps to make the ransom threat more believable, as users of infected computer may not associate the malware with the recent installation of a questionable program or the opening of an unscanned email attachment.
