To briefly explain the DNS system we will use a telephone directory as an example. When you look up the name of a specific person the telephone directory will have that person listed and show the telephone phone number. You then use the telephone number to connect with the specific person.
The DNS system does exactly the same. You enter a website address (URL) and the DNS system provides your computer with the IP address of the web URL you wish to visit. Your computer then connects to the website using the IP address that the DNS server provided.
The typical DNS setting on a non-infected computer is either set to receive website location information from a trusted server, or receives the website location from your internet service provider. When you enter the URL of a website you wish to connect to, the DNS system tells your computer the IP address in seconds and you are connected to the website. The DNS settings within your computer are extremely important and dictate exactly where your browser goes to.

A DNS Virus completely changes the website URL and IP address location system within your computer. When the DNS settings on your computer are changed your computer will be set to communicate with a malicious and non trusted DNS server.
This type of malicious DNS server tells your computer the wrong IP addresses for URL’s that you enter. So when you wish to navigate to www.google.com or any other web address, the bad DNS server will give your computer the wrong IP address and send you elsewhere.
You may be asking yourself why anyone would create a DNS virus and send people to the wrong website. The answer is simple: money. Display advertising is a major component of a DNS Virus. When you are sent to the wrong website and are instead shown numerous display ads, the creators of the DNS Virus are paid money. This is because they have accounts with the display ad companies and get paid for each visit.
