File Restore is a bogus hard drive recovery program that hides all of your files. In actuality it is an infection called the File Restore Virus. You can remove File Restore and retrieve all of your lost files using our removal instructions. Removal instructions are at the end of the article.

File Restore infects your computer when you are browsing the internet and unknowingly download a file that contains the virus. Once File Restore is on your computer it will hide all of your files, your start menu and your entire desktop. This fake program will then begin to alert you to hard drive problems on your computer.

You must always remember that File Restore is not a real software application. It is a cyber scam that using alerts, warnings, notices and hides your files to trick you into believing what it says. Anything that File Restore states is completely untrue and deceptive.

Nothing is actually wrong with your physical hard drive. File Restore was cleverly written to deceive computer users into believing that the hard drive is malfunctioning. The cyber criminals who created File Restore are using scare tactics to make you believe that it is telling you is true.

A lot of computer users who become infected with viruses such as File Restore believe that they can do a Windows System Restore and conveniently set their computer back to a date before they became infected. However, the hackers who created File Restore are also aware of Windows System Restore and have disabled the ability to remove it using that method. Attempting to get rid of the File Restore Virus by using Windows System Restore is a waste of time.

The virus removal instructions we have outlined below has been proven remove the File Restore Virus. You must be on the infected computer when performing these steps.

1 To begin, go ahead and reboot the infected computer. If the infected computer is turned off, go ahead and turn it on.

2 Immediately as the computer begins to boot, press F8 many times. Pressing F8 allows you to access the Advanced Options Menu.

3 Once you are in the Advanced Options Menu, use your arrow keys and select the Safe Mode with Networking option. Press enter when you have selected that option.

4 Windows will now boot into Safe Mode with Networking. Safe Mode with Networking will allow you to remove File Restore which it would not allow when Windows was in normal mode.

5Now that the virus is not running it is time to begin removal. On your keyboard, click and hold the Windows key, then press the R key. See keyboard diagram below.


6 After you have pressed the Windows and R key, the Windows Run Box will open. Type exactly the following into the run box and click OK:

After clicking OK, your computer will connect to our website and download our recommended virus removal program called Spyware Doctor by PC Tools.

7 When you see the PC Tools download box, click the Run button. The picture of the download box is below. After you click the “Run” button, PC Tools will launch. If your computer asks if you are sure you want to run PC Tools, click OK. The PC Tools installation will begin.

8After fully installing PC Tools the virus scan will automatically begin. Make sure that you also perform a Full Scan using PC Tools.

*Important: You must perform a Full Scan. Do this by selecting the Start Scan Now tab on the top right of the PC Tools interface. Then click the Start button under Full Scan.

9 After PC Tools has performed the Full Scan of your computer and found File Restore it is time to remove it. Simply click “Fix Checked” to remove the virus.

*Please note: You will not see the actual virus name in the list of found infections. The name of the virus in the PC Tools database is different than the name of the virus you see on your computer. If you see various infections on the scan results then that means that PC Tools found the File Restore Virus.

10 After you click “Fix Checked” you are going to need to register PC Tools to remove File Restore. Please register PC Tools and the File Restore Virus will be removed.

11 After you have registered PC Tools, and the virus was removed, you can safely reboot into Normal Mode. The virus will be completely gone.

Restore Hidden Files and Folders

Perform this AFTER you removed the File Restore Virus

Unfortunately one of the side effects of becoming infected with the File Restore Virus may be that your files and folders appear to be completely gone. However, the majority of the time they are only hidden, not deleted. Let’s begin to restore them. These steps must be performed after you have removed the File Restore Virus and have rebooted back into Windows normal mode.

(a) Go into the C: drive

First you must access the C: drive root directory.

1. Open up “My Computer”. Open the C: drive.

(b) Access Folder Options

Once you are in the C: drive you will see “Tools” on the menu bar.

1. Select Tools
2. Select “Folder Options”

(c) Select Show Hidden Files

Once you are in “Folder Options” you can un-hide the files in the C: drive.

1. Select View Tab
2. Select the “Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives” option.
3. Click “Apply”, then click “OK”.

(d) Highlight all contents and view properties

Now that you have un-hidden the contents of the C: root directory it is time to un-hide everything in the entire C: Drive.

1. Highlight all of the contents of the C: root directory.
2. Right click on the highlighted contents.
3. Select Properties

(e) Uncheck the “Hidden” box

You are now going to set everything in the entire computer to visible.

1. Uncheck the “Hidden” box.
2. Click Apply.
3. Click OK.


You should now be able to see everything throughout your entire computer. Your desktop icons should reappear as well as your start menu items.
