VaultCrypt Virus – Removal Instructions

VaultCrypt is a relatively new type of ransomware that functions similarly to many other viruses from the same family. VaultCrypt’s purpose is quite simple in nature: it encrypts your files and renders your PC useless. If you want your computer to return to normal, you must pay a hefty sum for decryption software. VaultCrypt and programs similar to it are not a new concept; ransomware has been around for some time. This is mainly because it has been shown to be successful in extorting money out of inexperienced computer users. When a user’s computer is infected with VaultCrypt, he/she sees a warning message that urges payment for decryption.

The bottom of the message typically features a countdown timer and another message that states users only have 72 hours to make a payment. The warning box provides an interface for purchasing the decryption software. If you attempt to power off the machine, you’ll notice that the infection is still there after a restart. The authors of VaultCrypt designed it in an effort to frighten users into paying the ransom. VaultCrypt is a malicious virus, and this is why you should never agree to pay the ransom demanded.

VaultCrypt is, in many cases, downloaded without the user’s knowing, and it often originates from adult or file download websites. Once the infection begins, files found on any drive letter in the computer are compromised and encrypted. Once VaultCrypt is executed, it kills the explorer.exe process. This process is responsible for controlling the Windows interface, and without it running, a computer is essentially useless. The infection also changes the desktop background to a list of instructions that outline how the user can pay the ransom. From the user’s end, all he/she sees is a black screen with a list of instructions for decryption in the center.

Each time the computer is restarted, the infection duplicates and renames itself. All files are given the .vault file extensions. In more recent versions of VaultCrypt, files have begun receiving random file extensions. Because the encryption process used to bar access to the files is highly complex, it is not recommended that you try to remove the virus on your own. A DIY repair could result in a highly corrupted file system that is past the possibility of repair. Likewise, you should never submit payment for decryption software under any circumstances.
